Day without shoes
My daughter decided to join in and support and go without shoes today. She is a Senior in high school and she even put together an invitation on her facebook wall, invited a lot of people and brought awareness to others about it, including me, her mom. She even had "the letter" printed in case she had to show it to someone.
She made it through her morning classes, even her 2nd hour teacher was talking about this "national event", day without shoes. After lunch she went to her class and the Teacher would not let her through the door. My daughter pleaded her case and the teacher simply stated, it's a violation of the health code and I can't let you in. My daughter proceeded to plead with her, letting her know she didn't have transportation, she didn't bring shoes and none of her friends had any spares, and explained the reason behind her not wearing shoes. The teacher simply replied, I guess you'll have to go home. She was not allowed in the class room.
I did call the principal, who claims he knew nothing about it until lunch time today and he simply stated the same thing, it's a violation to the health code and we can't let our kids run around school without shoes regardless of the cause.
I guess my concern is that even though it's a good cause, I think there needs to be more awareness brought to the kids before hand on how to handle this. They simply can't just go to school without shoes.
My daughter was all excited and felt good about participating (even though we had 30 degrees and snow) and she was sticking up for what she believed in, just to be shot down at school with an afternoon of "unexcused absense". They can't just print the letter that "TOMS" tells them too, because that doesn't do any good. It's something that needed to be addressed before hand with the school. Maybe TOMS could suggest that before people participate, they should check with their employer or school to see if there is going to be a problem. You know how teens can be, I suggested maybe there might be a problem at school, but she was convinced that due to the cause and because she had the letter they would understand....They understood but they DID NOT support her or the cause.
advice!
i am in need of advice! i talked to my principal a lot about letting the school go a day without shoes but he said there is a law that wont let us. but the high school is letting everyone! what should i do?
Thanks!
Thanks for the great work, TOMS!
