Collaborative Canvas Collection

At TOMS, we see art as an unparalleled form of expression and communication. We know that artists have a knack for sharing and spreading ideas others can’t, and we realize the power and potential held in a blank canvas. Artists can spark a dialogue or become the voice for a movement. Because of this distinct ability to influence and inform, we have always invited the art community to help us spread the TOMS One for One movement.

Recently, Incubus front man Brandon Boyd and Southern California artist Kristin Klosterman teamed up with TOMS in a Venice, California studio to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Channeling their collective voice, the duo transformed large canvases into their own distinct expression, which will become the material for a limited-edition collection of TOMS Shoes. TOMS hopes that the collection will inspire artists and non-artists alike to express themselves in ways that will have a positive impact on the world.

The Process

Creation June 24th, 2009Brandon Boyd & Kristin Klosterman collaborate in a Venice, CA studio to create original art pieces on large canvases.

Road Trip July 5th, 2009 The painted canvases are shipped out of Venice to a production house to begin the process from art to shoes.

Making the Cut July 15th, 2009 Individual swaths are cut from the canvas artwork to create the material for the shoes, ensuring that no two pairs are alike.

From Shreds to Shoes August 21st, 2009 Swaths are shaped, molded and outfitted with insoles to create custom TOMS from the canvases.

Arrival September 10th, 2009 The shoes are shipped back from the production house and returned home to TOMS HQ in Santa Monica where TOMS staff members get their first glimpses at the finished product.

Going Public September 26th, 2009 The one-of-a-kind TOMS are revealed to the public and become available for sale for the first time at Undefeated in Silverlake, California.
